Mile Magpie privacy policy

Effective 3 November 2026

Mile Magpie is a mileage and expenses logbook for iOS. This policy explains what data the app handles, where it goes, and why. In short: no account is required to use Mile Magpie, there are no ads, Mile Magpie runs no analytics of its own, and no data is sold or used for advertising. Your trip data syncs only through your own iCloud account. A few features — turn-by-turn navigation (provided by Google), iCloud Sync, live trip sharing and connecting a vehicle — involve data leaving your device, and each is described below.

1. Summary

WhatWhere it goesWhy
Trips, planned routes, expenses, receipt photos, saved locationsYour own iCloud account onlySo your data is available across your own devices and backed up
Location (GPS)Stays on-device; included in synced trip data if iCloud Sync is onTo measure mileage and detect arrival at a stop
Your location, route and destinations during turn-by-turn navigationGoogle, through its Navigation SDK, while the app is guiding youTo work out the route, reroute around traffic, and give turn-by-turn directions
Address search textSent to Apple MapKit and, for business names, Google Places (via a proxy that keeps Mile Magpie’s own API key private)To turn what you type into a real address
Calendar appointments that have an address (optional, only if you turn on “Use my calendar”)Read on your device from the calendars you choose; not stored in iCloud and not sent to Mile Magpie. An appointment’s address is looked up like any address you typeTo suggest routes to your appointments and to recognise a drive that ended at one
Claim details: your name, employer, vehicle and accountant’s email (optional)Your own iCloud account, with your settingsTo put on the claim pack you export, and to address the email you send
Live position, speed, heading, ETA and destination while live trip sharing is on (optional)Mile Magpie’s sharing server, shown to anyone with the link; removed when sharing stops, and within 15 minutes of the last updateSo people you choose can follow a journey
Peugeot/Stellantis login token and vehicle status (optional)Stored on-device; status requests relayed through Mile Magpie’s backend to Stellantis’ APITo show your car’s battery and range in the app (read-only)

Nothing in this table is used for advertising, sold to third parties, or used to track you across other apps or websites.

2. Data Mile Magpie handles

Using Mile Magpie for its core purpose — planning routes, tracking mileage, and logging expenses — needs no account, no sign-up, and no data sent to a Mile Magpie server. Everything is created and stored on your device unless you turn on iCloud Sync (on by default on a single device, since it’s how the app backs up your data).

The data types involved are:

  • Trip and route data — addresses, timestamps, distances, business/personal classification
  • Expense data — amounts, categories, and any receipt photos you attach
  • Location data — used to calculate mileage driven and to detect arrival at a destination
  • Saved locations — places you’ve named, e.g. “Home” or “Office”
  • Vehicle data — fuel/EV type and, if you connect a Peugeot, an authentication token and live vehicle status
  • Calendar appointments — only if you turn on “Use my calendar” in Settings and allow access. Mile Magpie reads the next week’s appointments that have an address, from the calendars you choose, to suggest routes and to match a drive to the appointment it went to. A calendar you mark as Work makes a matching drive a business drive, with the appointment’s title as its purpose. Appointments are kept on your device only and are never synced or sent to Mile Magpie; the address is looked up as described in section 5. Turn the setting off, or withdraw access in iOS Settings, to stop.
  • Claim details — your name, employer, vehicle registration and description, and your accountant’s email address, if you enter them. They are used only to fill in the claim pack you export. The pack and any email are made on your device and sent by you, from your own Mail app or share sheet.

3. iCloud Sync

Trips, expenses, receipts and saved locations sync automatically across your own devices using CloudKit and iCloud Drive, tied to your Apple ID. Mile Magpie does not operate its own server for this data and cannot see it — it is encrypted in transit and at rest under Apple’s iCloud infrastructure, governed by Apple’s own privacy policy. You can also export a full backup file to iCloud Drive at any time and restore it later.

4. Location data

Mile Magpie asks for location access — including “Always” access — so it can record driving distance accurately while the app is in the background or your phone is locked. This is core to the app’s purpose as a mileage logbook. Location is used to:

  • Calculate the distance and route of a journey
  • Detect when you’ve arrived at a planned stop
  • Offer your current location as a readable address when planning a route

Location data is stored as part of your trip records under the same iCloud Sync arrangement described above. It is never sold and never used for advertising. While the app is giving turn-by-turn directions, your location is also sent to Google to provide that navigation, as described in section 5.

Live trip sharing. Sharing a journey is optional and off until you start it. While sharing is on, your position, speed, heading, ETA and destination are sent every 10 seconds to Mile Magpie’s sharing server and shown to anyone with the link. The data is removed when sharing stops, and expires automatically within 15 minutes of the last update — so if the app is closed mid-journey, the link stops showing your position shortly afterwards. It is not linked to your identity and is not used for anything else.

5. Navigation and address search (Google)

Turn-by-turn navigation. Directions while driving, on your phone and in CarPlay, are provided by Google’s Navigation SDK. Before first use you’re shown Google’s terms, and navigation only starts once you accept them. While it’s guiding you, Google receives your precise location, the route and your destinations, and the SDK collects a device identifier, diagnostic and performance data and how the navigation screen is used. Google uses this to provide and improve navigation. None of it is used for advertising or to track you across other companies’ apps and websites. This is governed by Google Maps Platform’s terms and Google’s Privacy Policy.

Voice planning. Understanding a spoken trip request happens on your device, using Apple’s speech recognition and on-device model. The places it names are then looked up with Google Places, as below.

Alert voices. Turn-by-turn directions are always spoken by your phone’s own voice. If you choose a Google voice in Voice & Sound, the short phrase for an alert (such as “Speed camera ahead”) is sent to Google Cloud Text-to-Speech through the same proxy and played back; nothing else is sent, and the proxy does not keep it. Choose an Apple voice to keep alerts on the device.

Address search. When you search for a business by name (rather than a street address), Mile Magpie sends your search text to Google Places through a small proxy Mile Magpie operates. The proxy exists only to keep the underlying API key private — it does not log, store, or otherwise retain your search terms. Ordinary address and postcode lookups are handled entirely by Apple’s MapKit and never leave Apple’s own systems. Use of Google Places is subject to Google’s Privacy Policy.

6. Connected vehicle (Peugeot/Stellantis)

Live battery and range status for a connected vehicle is a separate, optional feature. It is read-only: Mile Magpie cannot lock, unlock or otherwise control your car. To use it, you sign in with your own MyPeugeot (Stellantis) account — the same credentials you’d use in their own app. Mile Magpie stores the resulting authentication token on your device and relays status checks through Mile Magpie’s own backend proxy to Stellantis’ API, using your credentials and your vehicle only. This feature is off by default and only activates once you explicitly sign in. Use of this feature is also subject to Stellantis’ privacy policy.

7. No ads, analytics, or tracking

Mile Magpie contains no advertising SDKs and runs no analytics of its own, and there is no cross-app or cross-site tracking. The only analytics are the navigation diagnostics Google’s Navigation SDK collects, described in section 5. It does not use the Apple Advertising Identifier (IDFA) and does not participate in any ad network.

Diagnostics you choose to send. If something isn’t working, About > Send Diagnostics prepares an email to Mile Magpie with the app’s version, your device model and iOS version, whether location and notifications are allowed, and whether maps, directions and iCloud sync are working. Unless you turn it off, it attaches the app’s activity log from the last 24 hours, which includes addresses you searched for or drove to and where drives started and ended. It never includes your trip history, expenses, receipts or car account details. The log is kept only on your device and deleted after 24 hours; nothing is sent unless you send that email yourself, from your own email app. We use what you send only to look into your problem, and delete it once that’s done.

8. Data retention and deletion

Your trip, expense, and location data is retained for as long as it exists in your iCloud account. You can delete any trip, expense, or saved location directly in the app at any time. Deleting the app removes all on-device data; deleting Mile Magpie’s data from iCloud (via Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Manage Storage) removes the synced copy. Disconnecting your Peugeot account revokes and deletes the stored authentication token immediately.

9. Your rights

Because Mile Magpie itself holds no account system and no server-side copy of your data, most of your data is already entirely under your own control via iCloud and the app itself — deleting it in the app or in iCloud settings is effectively exercising your right to access, correct, or erase it. If you have questions about data Mile Magpie’s optional integrations (Google, Stellantis) hold about you, those are governed by the respective providers’ own privacy policies linked above.

10. Children

Mile Magpie is a business/finance tool and is not directed at children. It does not knowingly collect data from children under 13 (or the relevant age of digital consent in your country).

11. Changes to this policy

If this policy changes — for example, if a new feature introduces a new data flow — this page will be updated and the effective date above revised. Material changes will be reflected in the app’s “What’s New” release notes.

12. Contact
